Yamato to build green-hydrogen facility in Western Australia

Yamato Bussan and partners today announced a final investment decision on a green-hydrogen production facility anchored by a 600 MW electrolyzer in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, with total project cost of ¥240 billion.

First shipments of green ammonia are targeted for FY2029, with production supplying primarily Japanese industrial customers. The project is a significant pillar of the ¥3 trillion energy-transition investment programme under Compass 2030.

Building the Infrastructure for a Decarbonized Society

The facility employs state-of-the-art water electrolysis technology, utilizing electricity directly from solar and wind power to generate clean hydrogen. The produced hydrogen will be converted into ammonia and transported by dedicated carrier ships to thermal power plants and industrial clusters in Japan. "This project will be a new milestone in the energy partnership between Japan and Australia," stated the project director.
